The public hearing falls on the heels of this week's EPA announcement that coal ash and smokestack scrubber sludge pose major human health and environmental risks. Despite the news, LG&E has announced plans to build a second coal plant at the currently existing Trimble County Generation station. On Nov 5th you can join us in taking action to safeguard public health by asking the Division of Water to keep coal waste out of your water.
LG&E's proposed power plant would dump 2.1 million gallons of wet coal ash sludge into the already decades-old wet storage pond, just yards from the Ohio River. The existing pond has no protective bottom liner to stop toxic fluids from leaching into the water and has already been designated as a significant hazard, should it fail.
LG&E has other options, but they're trying to avoid imminent new health standards by submitting this proposal before the new regulations go into effect. They should be cleaning up what's already there - not adding to the problem.
Please join us on November 5th in Bedford, Kentucky to protect public health and take a stand for clean energy future in Kentucky.
Carpooling: If you are interested in carpooling to the hearing, we'll be departing at 5:00 PM ET on November 5th from the 2210 Holiday Manor Center, Louisville, KY (get a map here). Park in front of the Chinese Restaurant.
