Volunteer Day at Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve
Harlan County, KY
The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission and Kentucky Natural Lands Trust will host a Volunteer Day at Blanton Forest State Nature Preserve on Saturday February 2, 2008.
We are asking for volunteers to help survey the forest for hemlock woolly adelgid infestations. Hemlock woolly adelgid is an invasive insect that has been devastating hemlock forests in the eastern United States. It has recently been found on several of Kentucky's nature preserves in the southeastern region.
All those interested should meet at the Blanton Forest parking lot Saturday at 10:30 a.m. EST and be dressed for steep terrain and weather. Training will be provided. Sign up, get directions or find more information by contacting:
alice.mandt@ky.gov: (502) 573-2886.
Directions:
Harlan County, approximately five miles west of the city of Harlan. From Interstate 75, take exit 29 onto U.S. Hwy 25E at Corbin. Travel south on U.S. 25E to Pineville. Turn left on U.S. Hwy 119 (crossing the Cumberland River) and travel north for 23.5 miles. Turn left on KY 840 at a sign for Camp Blanton. The Kentucky Green Energy Roadshow
Morehead (Mar 8), London (Mar 29), Owensboro (Apr 5), and Covington (Apr 12), KY
Appalachia - Science in the Public Interest, the Kentucky Solar Partnership, and the Kentucky Solar Energy Society are organizing a series of four full-day workshops in different locations around the Commonwealth to educate the public about using renewable energy and green building practices to build better homes, workplaces, and communities. Workshops will be held in Covington, London, Morehead, and Owensboro during March and April.
The program for each event will include a lineup of expert presenters on topics such as green building design and construction, energy efficiency and conservation, and solar, hydro, and other renewable energy resources. There will also be a panel discussion on state policies and incentives needed to accelerate the use of these sustainable energy and building practices. Exhibitor tables will be available for interested businesses and organizations.
SIERRA CLUB NEEDS HELP WITH OUR EXHIBITION
Sierra Club will have a table with literature and informational resources at each of these events. We need volunteers to help staff the tables (just hand out literature to table visitors) and take it down at the end of the day. If you would like to help, please contact:

download the brochure and registration information
The Heartwood Forest Council is the largest annual gathering of citizens from across the Eastern, Midwestern, and Southern United States who care about the health and well-being of our nation's forests.
The program will begin the afternoon of Friday, May 23, and continue through mid-day, Monday, May 26 (Memorial Day), and will be interspersed with ample social time, leisure, lively local music, dancing and great food. The Forest Council will be family friendly - kids of all ages are encouraged to attend.
The program will consist of three days of workshops, discussions, keynote speakers, and field trips. Key program elements will include:
Forest Issues: public lands management, roadless and other special areas, prescribed burning on state and national forests, genetically modified trees, sustainable forestry and low impact logging, land certification, and land management strategies and opportunities including the value of non-timber forest products.
Coal, air, energy and climate issues: coal mining and processing, including mountaintop removal, room and pillar, and longwall mining, coal-fired power plants, air pollution and global climate change. We will also talk about resurgent efforts to promote nuclear power, the alternatives to fossil fuel such as wind, solar and hydropower, and the connections between forests and energy production including cellulosic ethanol and biomass.
Sustainability issues: creating viable communities and taking responsibility for our own future; localized economies, permaculture, local and regional food production and distribution, alternative energy and transportation, traditional uses of plants and their preservation, religion and environmental protection, alternatives to the corporate control of food and seed supply; and how to sustain our minds, bodies and spirits as we seek environmental justice and transformational change. Up to date information, including program, registration, directions, a complete presenter list, and ride-share information will soon be available at www.heartwood.org/forestcouncil/

Peace Transit
Energy, War & Global Environmental Sustainablility
Louisville, KY - around the USA
Peace Transit is a slow, cross-country bicycle tour - think of it as a relay. We will deliver to the President, to governors, and to mayors a petition requesting that they take action minimizing transportation energy consumption and reducing their commitment to war.
The tour will launch from Louisville on November 3rd and head south to New Orleans (probably by way of the Natchez Trace). The plan is to meander slowly (through the winter) along the Gulf eastward to the tip of Florida, turning northward up the Atlantic. By March 1 we want to leave Savannah GA, heading north at a faster pace - we have to be on the west coast before winter of 2008. (We hope the war will be over by then, but our national oil dependencies will not.) Then, down the Pacific, across the desert, back to New Orleans, and back to Louisville.
The Tour welcomes bicyclists for short, or longer, distances all along the route. Again, this tour is a relay. The Louisville KY team is passing the baton to the Bardstown KY team. The Bardstown KY team will pass the baton to the third team and on around the country the tour will go.
